> HERE WHERE PORTUGAL HAS BORN!

In 1143 the King Afonso Henriques had a separate territory from Leão Kingdom and found here the nationality.

Among the centuries, Guimarães was developed as an important centre of culture and founded its traditional industries - cutlery, spinning and weaving, leather and jewellery.

During the XX century has come the actual and important cluster of textile and footwear industries supported by Minho's University.

European Capital of Culture

Guimarães European Capital of Culture 2012, as cultural project with international scale, represents an extraordinary opportunity to encourage and sustain the important investment made in recent years in culture, knowledge and technology, so that it becomes a turning point to consolidate Guimarães’ regeneration, definitively transforming it into a Creative City of European importance.

Based on the relationship between the urban, economic and cultural sectors, this project also allows for the development of new and interactive ways of living, working, studying and experiencing the city, repositioning Guimarães iin the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula.

Guimarães European Capital of Culture 2012 can and must be seen as an excellent european case study, inspiring hundreds of similar-sized European cities to choose a regeneration process that is supported by the same strategic model – Cultural-led Urban Regeneration.European Capital of Culture.
